Brief Description: The EH Laboratory Director is a senior scientist housed in the UW Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences.  The position’s overall responsibilities include directing a complex service provider (Environmental Health Laboratory) and research resource (Trace Organics Analysis Center). The Environmental Health Laboratory, funded through a Washington state appropriation to DEOHS, provides essential analytical support to Washington state employers, employees, government agencies, and the general public. The Environmental Health Laboratory is currently accredited by the American Industrial Hygiene Association Laboratory Accreditation Program.  The Trace Organics Analysis Center is a valuable research resource serving UW faculty, principal investigators and external researchers with complex methods development and implementation, chemical analyses, and integration into competitive federal and private grant submissions and awards. The Director’s skills in analytical chemistry as applied to environmental and occupational health sciences is highly sought after in various UW departments and centers. The Director must be able to navigate very complex scientific questions from many perspectives ranging from the big picture scientific approaches to the day-to-day detail of laboratory operations (overseeing quality control, sustaining equipment through acquisitions and repairs, overseeing accreditation, and advising on finances, and managing scientific staff). Working in a higher education setting, the Director is also responsible for mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, as well as individuals pursuing post-doctoral education and junior faculty newly entering the field of environmental and occupational health sciences. Instructional Lab Technician (Cascadia College)

Brief Description: Under the general supervision of the Dean for Student Learning, the 10-Month Cyclic Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2 - Chemistry (September to June annually) will coordinate and provide instructional laboratory support to chemistry undergraduate courses. Other science courses may also be assigned to this position. Lab set-ups are coordinated with the faculty and completed without direct supervision. The position interacts with the other Instruction & Classroom Support Technicians, Cascadia Science faculty, and University of Washington Bothell (UWB) employees to complete assignments. Questions regarding work/projects are directed to the Dean or the department responsible (i.e. Purchasing, UW Environmental Health and Safety) for particular projects. Duties include (1) procuring and preparing chemicals, equipment, teaching aids and other materials for laboratory instruction, (2) safely maintaining and disposing of chemicals, (3) maintaining laboratory supplies and equipment, (4) preparing weekly laboratory set ups in chemistry and other science courses  as assigned, and 5) attending lab classes to assist instructors.
